Article
I. Name
The congregationally governed Christian fellowship shall be known
as the Bon Air Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Bon Air,
Virginia.
Article
II. Authority
Christ is the acknowledged and recognized head of this Church.
Article
III. Purpose and Mission
Section
I. To promote Christian fellowship in the Bon Air community and
throughout the world.
Section
II. To win people to faith in Jesus Christ, as revealed in the New
Testament, and commit them actively to the church, to help them
grow in the grace and knowledge of Christ that they may increasingly
know and do His will and to work for the unity of all Christians
and with them engage in the common task of building the Kingdom
of God.
Section
III. To cooperate with and support the local, regional and general
manifestations of the Christian Churches (Disciples of Christ) in
proclaiming the gospel of Christ.
Article
IV. Ordinances of Baptism and Lord's Supper
Section
I. Baptism in the Church shall be by immersion of a believer in
Christ,
thus symbolizing for the believer his death to sin, his burial with
Christ, and his resurrection to a new life in Christ and for Him.
Section
II. The observance of the Lord's Supper is this church's remembrance
of Christ's sacrifice for mankind. By partaking of the bread, which
represents His broken body, and of the wine, which represents His
spilled blood, we are reminded of His love for us. The Lord's Supper
shall be observed each Sunday and at such other times as the Minister
or Elders deem advisable.
Article
V. Membership
Section
I. The charter members of this Church shall constitute its initial
membership.
Section
II. Additions to the membership shall be made of:
a.
Those who have confessed Jesus as the Christ, have taken Him to
be their personal Saviour, have been baptized by immersion, and
who present themselves for membership in this church.
b.
Those who present themselves for membership by letter or by statement
from other churches and who have acknowledged Jesus as the Christ,
have taken Him to be their personal Saviour, and who have been baptized
in accordance with the practices of the churches from which they
come.
Although
the Church believes that immersion is the scriptural and proper
method of baptism, it recognizes that some churches practice other
forms of baptism in the sincere belief that they are also scriptural
and proper. In thus accepting as members those from other than immersion,
this Church is not compromising its belief that immersion is the
scriptural and proper method of baptism but is merely extending
to these fellow believers in Christ it's recognition of their right
of belief and sincerity of purpose.
Article
VI. Church Officers
Section
I. The following shall serve as officers of this Church and shall
be elected by the membership, except as otherwise provided for filling
interim vacancies that may occur.

Elders
b. Deacons
c. President of the Membership and Chairman of the Board
d. Church Clerk
e. Treasurer
f. Financial Secretary
g. Trustees
h. Superintendent of the Church School
Section
II. The number of church officers and their duties shall be as set
forth in the By-Laws.
Section
III. The Elders, Deacons, Church Clerk, and Treasurer shall be elected
on a rotation system basis for terms of three years each beginning
on the first day of the Church year.
Section
IV. The President of the Membership and Chairman of the Church Board
shall be elected for a one year term and shall be an Elder or a
Deacon.
Section
V. The Trustees shall be elected for indefinite terms and are subject
to the approval of the court having jurisdiction.
Section
VI. The Superintendent of the Church School shall be elected for
a one year term.
Section
VII. The Financial Secretary shall be elected for a three year term.
Section
VIII. The officers serving on a rotation system basis shall not
be eligible for re-election until one year after the expiration
of their terms of office. Deacons may be eligible for the Eldership
without the year's lapse.
Article
VII. The Minister
Section
I. Duties - The Minister shall be the spiritual counselor and advisor
of the membership and shall perform those duties which usually pertain
to the office of Minister. The minister shall be an ex-officio member,
without vote, of all the functional departments of the church.
Section
II. Selection - The recommendation of a Minister to the membership
for call shall be made by such means as the Church Board shall determine.
A call shall be extended by the membership on not less than a three-fourths
majority vote of the members present and voting at a duly called
membership meeting.
Section
III. Term of Service - The Minister shall be called for an indefinite
period of time. The Minister or the membership may terminate ministerial
services by giving ninety days written notice, unless an otherwise
mutually acceptable termination time is agreed upon. Membership
action shall be by a majority vote of those present and voting at
a duly called meeting of the membership. Voting shall be by secret
ballot.
Article
VIII. The Church Board
Section
I. There shall be a Church Board composed of the Elders and Deacons,
who shall serve as the voting members thereof.
Section
II. The Church Board shall formulate and administer the policies
and direct the operations of the Church Section 3. The organization
and procedures of the Board shall be as set forth in the by-Laws.
Article
IX. Membership Meetings
Section
I. There shall be an annual meeting of the membership of the Church
at least thirty days prior to the end of the church year, at which
time Church officers shall be elected. budgets adopted. and such
other business transacted as may be presented.
Section
II. Additional membership meetings may be called by the Church Board.
Other meetings shall be called by the President of the Membership
on written petition of at least twenty percent of the members of
the Church.
Section
III. Written notice of membership meetings shall be sent to the
members at least one week prior to the date of the membership meeting.
Section
IV. Robert's Rules of Order shall be the parliamentary authority
for proceedings of the membership meetings.
Article
X. By-Laws
In
order to implement the provisions of this Constitution, authority
is hereby granted for the adoption of the necessary by-laws.
Article
XI. Amendments to the Constitution
This Constitution may be amended at any duly called meeting of the
Church membership by a three- fourths vote of those present and
voting, provided written notice as to the wording of the proposed
amendment to be voted upon is sent to the members at least one week
prior to the date of the meeting.
Article
XII. Distribution of the Constitution
A
copy of the Constitution and any adopted amendments not contained
therein shall be made available to the members of the church.
